Gold Standard - Purple Octane - 14g
Purple Octane is Seed Junky Genetics' grape-and-gas indica, and this half ounce was grown by Gold Standard in its own greenhouses in the Sierra Foothills of Nevada County. Seed Junky is the breeder behind Jealousy and Permanent Marker, and Purple Octane comes out of the same parent lines. The name is the tasting note: purple buds, dark grape and gasoline. Pick it for the evening, when the goal is a quiet body and nowhere to be.

Genetics & Lineage
Seed Junky Genetics bred Purple Octane, and SeedFinder credits the cross to the breeder JBeezy: (Biscotti x Sherb BX1) x Jealousy F2. Each piece has a history. Biscotti is a Cookie Fam cross of Gelato #25 and South Florida OG. Sherb BX1 is Seed Junky's backcross of Sunset Sherbet. Jealousy is Seed Junky's Sherb BX1 x Gelato 41 and was Leafly's 2022 Strain of the Year, and Permanent Marker, Leafly's pick for 2023, comes from a near-identical recipe of Biscotti, Sherb and Jealousy. Leafly sums up the project well: Seed Junky "drilled down into the purple and the gas in the GSC/Gelato family." Gold Standard has not said where its cut came from, whether a nursery clone or its own selection from seed, and it publishes nothing on the strain beyond the name. If you bought Seed Junky's own Purple Octane eighth here before, this is the same strain name from a different grower, and a greenhouse can bring out a different side of a plant than an indoor room.
Flavor & Aroma
Grape and fuel, in that order. Leafly describes an intense grape-fuel aroma and tags chemical, grape and diesel. Weedmaps' tallies run grape, berry, diesel, earthy, flowery and sweet, and Seed Junky's own listing calls it gassy with hints of rich berries. Expect the bag to open on dark grape, closer to grape wine than fresh fruit, with gasoline right behind it. The smoke is sweet going in and turns to diesel on the exhale, with pepper in the background. Gold Standard has not published a terpene panel, and sources on the strain disagree on the lineup, though myrcene appears in both published lists we found, alongside linalool in one and caryophyllene in the other. The buds should show the purple in the name. The label carries the tested numbers.
Effects
Heavy and calm, after a short climb. Leafly's most reported effects are sleepy, relaxed and tingly. Seed Junky describes a fast, strong onset that leaves you calm with a deep body high, while Weedmaps' write-up describes a slower build, head first and body second. Either way the shape is the same: a short lift in mood, then a heavy, tingly calm that settles into the body and stays. This is an evening strain. A full joint at night usually ends on the couch, and a long session can end in sleep. Dry mouth and dry eyes are the common side effects. If heavy indicas leave you foggy the next morning, keep the dose small.
Best For
- Evenings at home: the body side is the point
- Gas and grape fans: fuel and dark grape in the same bag
- End of a long shift: the calm, heavy finish people reach for after work
- Seed Junky followers: the breeder's grape-and-gas cross, grown in a Sierra Foothills greenhouse
- A week of nights: a half ounce of one evening strain
Not for: daytime, work, or anyone who dislikes a heavy body.
Pairings
Food: something rich and savory, a pizza from Tony's Pizza Napoletana or a sandwich from Molinari Delicatessen, eaten before the first bowl rather than after. Music: slow and heavy, Portishead's Dummy or Massive Attack's Mezzanine. Activity: a film you have seen before, a blanket, the phone in another room. For a brighter start to the same evening, Gold Standard's Lemon Cherry Sherbet is on the same shelf.
Cultivation
Gold Standard is the trade name of KCP Corp, a licensed microbusiness in Nevada County run by what the brand calls a family of local growers. It grows in its own climate-controlled greenhouses in the Sierra Foothills, a mix of light-assist houses that supplement the sun and light-deprivation houses that shorten the day with blackout covers, and it does not say which one produced a given batch. The brand's pitch is that the foothills climate does most of the work and the greenhouse steadies the rest. State records list a cottage-class Mixed-Light Tier 1 cultivation license for the company, the tier for greenhouses that add a low level of artificial light. Gold Standard calls itself Nevada County's first microbusiness and runs seed to sale, and this half ounce shipped to us from its own license.
Dosing
New to flower: one small puff, then wait fifteen minutes. This one is strong.
Regular smoker: a half-gram joint in the evening is plenty.
Heavy tolerance: a gram, with nothing left to do tonight.
Storage
Keep the bag sealed until you start it, then move the flower to a glass jar with a humidity pack, cool and dark. Gas-forward strains lose the fuel note first when the jar sits open, and the grape goes flat after that. A half ounce keeps for weeks this way.
