A Golden State - Alpine Sunrise - 3.5g

$54.99

First light on Mount Shasta, bottled. A Golden State grows this one indoors in Redding, in the shadow of the mountain whose snowmelt they water the plants with, and the name is not just scenery: Alpine Sunrise is their morning sativa, a Durban and Paris OG cross that smells like petrol and chocolate mousse and gets you moving without getting you rattled. It is also one of the brand's best sellers, which in a catalog full of strains named after peaks and moonbeams says something.

Genetics & Lineage

F1 Durban x Paris OG, per A Golden State's own product copy, and the brand breeds everything in house from a seed library it says runs past a thousand varieties. The Durban side is the South African landrace line behind Durban Poison, the clear-headed, energetic sativa that anchors half the daytime strains in California. Paris OG is a Los Angeles OG cut, indica-heavy, known for a sweet, fuel-and-pine profile, and it is what gives Alpine Sunrise its body and its chocolate edge. AGS calls the cross cerebral yet steady, powerful yet gentle, and for once the copy is accurate. No outside breeder is credited; this is a house cut.

Flavor & Aroma

AGS lists the aroma as earthy, petrol and chocolate mousse, and the jar delivers all three in that order. Crack the lid and you get a skunky, earthy fuel, close to the smell of a gas station next to a bakery, and the chocolate is a real note on the finish rather than a marketing flourish. A reviewer at The Highest Critic called it skunky, earthy and citrusy with fuel highlights, and a San Jose retailer's tasting notes add dried sage and wildflower, which is the Durban side. Dominant terpenes per the brand are limonene, caryophyllene and humulene, which reads as citrus, pepper and hops, and explains why the smoke is smooth but never sweet. Weedmaps' tags are citrus, diesel, earthy and pine. One honest caveat from a 2025 review: that particular jar ran a touch dry, so give the buds a squeeze test.

Effects

Clear first, then warm. The Durban lift comes on in five to fifteen minutes as a bright, buoyant, focused mood that a reviewer described as "quite clearheaded" and paired with "a really nice body high," which is the Paris OG doing its job underneath. Weedmaps' effect tags are creative, energetic, focused and uplifted, and the San Jose retailer's notes call it social and creative rather than racy. The caution is potency. A Dispensary Adventures reviewer rated the strength a ten and admitted to being "distractingly high" when they meant to get things done. This is high-test indoor, so a couple of puffs is a work session and a whole joint is a day off. Dry mouth and dry eyes are the common side effects; anxiety is rare for a sativa this strong. Duration is two to three hours.

Best For

  • Weekend mornings: coffee, a bowl, and a plan
  • Creative work: writing, painting, anything where focus beats speed
  • A hike up Telegraph Hill to Coit Tower: the name is a mountain, use it that way
  • Sativa smokers who dislike jitters: the OG side smooths the edges
  • Chocolate people: the mousse note on the exhale is worth the jar alone

Not for: late nights, or anyone who wants to be sedated rather than switched on.

Pairings

Food: a pain au chocolat from one of the Columbus Ave bakeries, or dark chocolate and an espresso. Music: Khruangbin, Fleetwood Mac's Rumours, anything for a sunny kitchen. Activity: a Saturday walk to the Ferry Building along the Embarcadero, a garden, a long breakfast. Pairs with A Golden State's Empanadas Diez if you want the brand's dessert indica for the evening after.

Cultivation

A Golden State was founded in 2018 or 2019 (the brand and the press disagree by a few months) in Redding, Shasta County, by Nishant Reddy, Rob "Bear" Masterson and Simmon Saraf. Everything is grown indoors in coco medium under a mix of LED and HPS light, watered with Mount Shasta snowmelt that the brand says arrives cold and needs almost no filtration, and hand-trimmed. AGS runs its cultivation on hydroelectric power and carbon offsets and describes itself as carbon-neutral. The genetics are all proprietary, bred from an in-house seed library with around eighty-five strains in rotation. The flower ships in a powder-coated white glass jar with a gold mark inside a printed carton, one color per strain. The brand's Lava Flower took second place in the sativa category at the 2023 High Times Cannabis Cup SoCal, and Moonbeam placed third at that year's Transbay Challenge.

Dosing

New smoker: two puffs, then wait ten minutes. This is stronger than it tastes.

Regular smoker: a half-gram joint is a full morning. Save the rest.

Heavy tolerance: as much as you like, but the reviewer who got "distractingly high" had a tolerance too.

Storage

Keep it in the jar, cool and dark. The chocolate and citrus notes fade first in heat and light. If a jar arrives a little dry, a small humidity pack brings it back within a day.
