UpNorth - Headband - Pre-Roll 5-Pack - 2.5g

The strain is named after a feeling, and the feeling is real: about ten minutes in, a band of light pressure settles across your forehead and temples, like a cap you forgot you were wearing. That is Headband, the OG Kush and Sour Diesel cross that has been on California menus since the mid-2000s. UpNorth grows it indoors in Humboldt and packs five half-gram minis of whole-nug flower into one box. Lemon and fuel on the nose, a creamy smoke, and a high that stays sharp longer than the parents would suggest.

Genetics & Lineage

OG Kush x Sour Diesel. UpNorth prints it that way, and Leafly, Weedmaps and the seed catalogs all agree on the parents. Where they disagree is on who made it first. The clone-only Headband that circulated through California has a murky origin story, and DNA Genetics later released a seed version under their Reserva Privada label made by reversing OG Kush onto Sour Diesel, with a note that theirs is not the 707 cut. That matters because 707 Headband is a separate Humboldt variety (the 707 is the area code) with Master Kush in its background and a different terpene lean. UpNorth labels this plain Headband with plain OG x Sour Diesel parentage. Whether they run the old clone or a seed line is not public.

Flavor & Aroma

Open the box and you get lemon peel and diesel at the same time, with a wet-earth note underneath that UpNorth's copy calls grounding. Leafly's description of the strain as a creamy smoke accented by lemon and diesel is accurate for this cut: the inhale is bright and sour, the smoke itself is smooth and almost thick, and the exhale goes woody and earthy. Weedmaps' crowd-sourced flavor tallies on Headband run diesel, earthy and woody in that order, with citrus and sweet behind them, and that is the order it arrives in. UpNorth does not publish a terpene panel for Headband; Leafly's aggregate for the strain leans caryophyllene, limonene and myrcene, which reads as pepper, lemon and a soft body finish.

Effects

The pressure comes first. A Leafly reviewer put it as "that signature headband has me feelin' it behind my eyes," and most people feel exactly that within the first ten minutes. Behind it is a cerebral lift that UpNorth describes as a clear-headed, focused high with gentle tension relief, and for the first hour that holds: creative, calm, capable of a task. The second hour is where the OG shows up and the body softens. Sources split on onset. Leafly warns it can come on slow, AllBud says it hits fast, and the honest answer is that it depends on how much you smoke in the first five minutes. Negatives are consistent: dry mouth, dry eyes, and a spacey feeling that can get in the way of anything detailed if you push past a mini. A few people read the forehead pressure as a headache.

Best For

  • Late afternoon: sharp enough to finish the day, soft enough to close it
  • Creative work with a deadline: the first hour is focused and calm
  • A mini on the Filbert Steps: half a gram is the right size for the climb to Coit Tower
  • Splitting a box: five minis across a week, or across five friends
  • People who find Sour Diesel too racy: the OG side keeps the wheels on

Not for: precision work, or anyone who dislikes the head-pressure sensation.

Pairings

Food: lemon and salt, a bowl of pho, or the focaccia from the Columbus Avenue bakeries. Music: Radiohead's In Rainbows, Tame Impala, anything with a groove you can sink into. Activity: sketching, cooking a long recipe, a slow walk through City Lights Bookstore before the body phase lands. Pairs with UpNorth's NYC Diesel pre-roll if you want two Diesel cousins, one bright and one heavy.

Cultivation

UpNorth grows indoors in Humboldt County out of Arcata, with a catalog built around legacy and landrace strains and a habit of hand-trimming and hand-packing everything. The brand says its pre-roll packs are hand-packed with whole-nug indoor flower, five half-gram pre-rolls per box, the same cut they jar as eighths. Weedmaps files the format under minis. UpNorth does not print the paper type on the pack.

Dosing

New smoker: half a mini, then wait fifteen minutes. The pressure sensation surprises people the first time.

Regular smoker: one mini is an afternoon. Two is an evening.

Heavy tolerance: a mini per sitting still lands, and the spacey second hour shows up whether you want it or not.

Storage

Keep the minis in the box, cool and dark. The lemon top notes fade fastest in heat. Relight gently; half-gram cones burn hot if you rush them.

FAQ

Is Headband indica or sativa? A balanced hybrid. Weedmaps tags UpNorth's cut as a hybrid. The first hour is cerebral and focused, the second is relaxed and heavier.

Why is it called Headband? The high produces a band of pressure around the forehead and temples that most smokers notice within ten minutes.

What does Headband taste like? Lemon peel and diesel on the inhale, a creamy smoke, earthy and woody on the exhale.

How strong is it? High-test indoor flower. Half a gram is a real dose, and the box holds five of them.

What is the lineage? OG Kush x Sour Diesel, per UpNorth. Not the 707 Headband cut, which has Master Kush in its background.

Is Headband good for anxiety? Mixed. The OG side is calming, but the head pressure and the spacey second hour bother some anxious smokers. Start with half a mini.

Is it a creeper? It can be. Leafly warns the effects sometimes come on slowly, so pace the first few puffs.

How long does it last? Two to three hours from a single mini.
