A Golden State - Palo Cedro - 3.5g

Palo Cedro is a small Shasta County town just east of Redding, close to where A Golden State grows, and the strain that carries its name is the brand's OG hybrid: Tahoe OG crossed with Permanent Marker. It opens on sweet citrus, settles into earth and pine, and finishes with a little candy. Leaf Magazine's reviewer described the kind of calm that loosens tight shoulders. It comes as a 3.5g eighth of indoor flower.

Genetics & Lineage

Palo Cedro is Tahoe OG x Permanent Marker, per Leaf Magazine's review and the strain's GrowDiaries entry, which credits A Golden State as the breeder. Tahoe OG is the NorCal half: Leafly describes it as a phenotype of OG Kush, with OG Kush and SFV OG Kush listed as parents, known for pine, earth and lemon and for heavy, relaxing effects. Permanent Marker is the newer half. Leafly says Seed Junky Genetics bred it from Biscotti, Sherb Bx and Jealousy, and named it for a sharp, inky, chemical nose with candy and gas underneath. AGS breeds from its own seed library and has not published more about the cross. The sources split on type: Weedmaps tags Palo Cedro an indica, while GrowDiaries and retail listings carry it as a hybrid. With an OG on one side and a modern hybrid on the other, it behaves like an indica-leaning hybrid.

Flavor & Aroma

Leaf Magazine's review describes bright, sweet citrus up front giving way to earthy tones and a hint of pine, then an earthy, lightly spiced smoke with a slightly confectionery finish. Growers on GrowDiaries list lemon zest, cedar and a light candy sweetness, which suits a strain named for a cedar town. Weedmaps adds woody and chemical to its flavor tags, and the chemical note is Permanent Marker's signature, softer here than in the parent. Weedmaps lists limonene, caryophyllene and pinene as its terpenes, and grower data adds linalool. Limonene explains the citrus, pinene the pine and cedar, and caryophyllene the pepper on the exhale.

Effects

The shoulders-down line from Leaf Magazine is the clearest summary of Palo Cedro. Weedmaps' tags run from euphoric, uplifted and focused through relaxed and sleepy, and grower reports list focused, happy and relaxed. Expect a clear, upbeat first stretch from the citrus-forward profile, then the Tahoe OG side pulling the body down over the next hour. It works best as an early evening strain: functional for a while, heavy by the end. Dry eyes and dry mouth are the usual side effects, and Leafly's reviews of Permanent Marker mention the occasional anxious moment, so start small if you are sensitive.

Best For

  • The hour after work: shoulders down, phone away
  • Early evening plans: functional at first, settled by the end
  • OG fans who want something brighter: Tahoe OG weight under a citrus and candy top
  • Winding down before a movie: relaxed, and a little sleepy by the credits
  • Smokers who like a clean, woody finish: cedar and pine rather than sugar

Not for: mornings, anyone sensitive to heavy body effects, or work that needs focus past the first hour.

Pairings

Food: something with citrus and char, like a lemony roast chicken or grilled fish, or a cannoli if the candy note wins. Music: Fleetwood Mac, The War on Drugs, or Mac DeMarco. Activity: sunset from the Greenwich Steps, an evening stretch, or a slow dinner at home.

Cultivation

A Golden State was founded in 2018 or 2019 in Redding by Nishant Reddy, Rob "Bear" Masterson and Simmon Saraf, and it names strains after the country around the farm: Palo Cedro, Shasta Bloom, Manzanita, Celestial Peak. The flower is grown indoors in coco under LED and HPS light, watered with Mount Shasta snowmelt and trimmed by hand, on hydroelectric power plus carbon offsets. Genetics are all proprietary, with roughly eighty-five strains in rotation. Palo Cedro ships in the brand's powder-coated white glass jar with a gold mark, inside a printed carton in its own color.

Dosing

New smoker: two puffs, then wait fifteen minutes. The relaxed part arrives in stages.

Regular smoker: half a joint covers an evening.

Heavy tolerance: a full joint is fine with nothing left on the schedule; the OG side keeps building.

Storage

Keep the jar closed and the carton on, somewhere cool and dark. The citrus top notes fade first when flower sits warm or open, leaving mostly wood and pine. A drawer at room temperature is right.
