818 - Garlicane - 3.5g

$22.99

The Garlicane strain is In House Genetics' cross of GMO and Slurricane, and this is an eighth of it from 818, the San Fernando Valley company. It is an indica-dominant hybrid with a loud, savory flavor: garlic and pepper first, then a candied sweetness that 818 likens to "pina colada dipped in gas." 818's own listing names a Mamiko Seeds GMO mother and a Slurricane father. Pick it for savory funk and an evening that starts lively and ends heavy.

Genetics & Lineage

818, Leafly, Weedmaps and SeedFinder all credit In House Genetics with crossing GMO and Slurricane. GMO, also sold as GMO Cookies or Garlic Cookies, came out of Mamiko Seeds' Chem Cookies seeds, which pair Chem D, a Chemdawg cut, with the Forum cut of Girl Scout Cookies; Weedmaps credits a grower known as Skunkmasterflex with finding the GMO plant in those seeds. Slurricane is In House Genetics' own cross of Do-Si-Dos, an Archive Seed Bank strain, and Purple Punch. In House Genetics later crossed Garlicane back to Slurricane for Garlic Storm, per SeedFinder. Watch the name: Advanced Seeds sells its own feminized Garlicane from the same two parents, and you will also see the name split as Garlic Cane; at least one shop uses that spelling for a KRD flower it lists as Garlic Cake x Face Off OG, a different cross.

Flavor & Aroma

Garlic leads in the write-ups. Weedmaps describes heavy garlic with some sweetness, tracing the garlic to GMO and the sugar to Slurricane, and Leafly tags pepper, woody and earthy, adding chestnut and mint. 818's own tasting note runs sweeter and fruitier, with candy, tropical fruit and a Chemdawg-style fuel note. A 2023 review of 818's own Garlicane on The Highest Critic found a pungent garlic nose with earthy, herbal spice underneath and a flash of mint. Leafly and Weedmaps list limonene, pinene and caryophyllene as the main terpenes: citrus, pine and pepper under the funk. 818 has not published a terpene panel; the label carries the tested numbers for this lot.

Effects

Plan for two stages. Per Weedmaps, it opens with a jolt of energy and finishes heavy in the body, so some people save it for a big meal and a nap after. The strain card on 818's listing adds euphoric, creative and focused. Leafly's reviewers weight the back half: sleepy, relaxed and tingly lead its list, individual reviews add hungry and talkative, and Leafly rates the overall effect as calming. Dry mouth and dry eyes are the usual downsides, and anxious shows up on Leafly's negatives, so go slowly if strong flower makes you edgy.

Best For

  • Garlic and gas fans: savory funk first, with a candied edge behind it
  • Dinner, then the couch: lively early, heavy late
  • A North Beach evening: a slow lap of Washington Square before the heavy half lands
  • Smokers with some tolerance: Leafly rates its THC above average
  • Trying 818: a Valley company's indoor eighth of an In House Genetics strain

Not for: mornings, work you need to finish, or anyone who wants a fruit-first strain.

Pairings

Food: lean into the garlic with a clam and garlic slice from Golden Boy, or a sandwich from Molinari Delicatessen on Columbus Ave, eaten in Washington Square. Music: low and heavy, a Madlib beat tape or an old Mobb Deep record. Activity: use the lively first stretch for the climb up Telegraph Hill to Coit Tower, and be home before the body side builds.

Cultivation

The label is named for the San Fernando Valley's area code, and 818 Brands says three longtime friends with cultivation, dispensary and construction backgrounds founded the company there. 818 says it grows in two indoor facilities, Arleta in the Valley and Adelanto in the high desert, and its grow notes count more than 4,000 LED lights. State records confirm the desert side: 818 Brands Adelanto holds a medium indoor cultivation license in San Bernardino County. This eighth shipped from 818 Brands Los Angeles, the company's licensed distributor. For Garlicane, 818's listing says the plants flower with a sturdy frame, thick frost and color from the Slurricane side, and 818 listed Garlicane in its live resin and solventless rosin drop with Motley Terpz. It has not said which facility grew this batch. Browse 818 at Gemme Verdi for the rest of the lineup.

Dosing

New to flower: one or two small pulls, then wait fifteen minutes; the heavy half comes after the lift.

Regular smoker: a half-gram joint or two bowls covers dinner and the evening after.

Heavy tolerance: a full gram after you eat, and plan on staying in.

Storage

Keep it sealed, cool and dark. Garlic and gas carry, so a tight glass jar keeps the smell in and the buds fresh; dry flower burns harsh. Grind just before you smoke.
