UpNorth - Pineapple Express - Pre-Roll - 1g

UpNorth Pineapple Express is a single one-gram pre-roll of indoor flower, not infused, from UpNorth, which calls itself a small-batch Humboldt indoor grower focused on legacy genetics. UpNorth lists the strain as Trainwreck x Hawaiian, the same cross Leafly gives, and labels it a hybrid. By UpNorth's description, the nose is fresh pineapple and the taste sweet citrus with a touch of pine. The brand pitches it for daytime, and that is where it fits best.

Genetics & Lineage

Trainwreck x Hawaiian is the cross on UpNorth's Weedmaps listing, and Leafly agrees. Trainwreck is the better documented half. Leafly calls it a Northern California staple, bred from Mexican and Thai sativas crossed with Afghani, and offers two stories for the name: a grow near a train wreck in Arcata, in Humboldt County, or plants that sprawled like one. Hawaiian is vaguer. Neither UpNorth nor Leafly says whose Hawaiian went into the cross, or who made it first.

The name has its own history. Seth Rogen, who co-wrote and starred in the 2008 film, has said there was no strain called Pineapple Express when they made it. The title came from the nickname for the warm, wet storm systems that ride in from Hawaii to the West Coast. Whichever came first, the name now covers more than one plant. G13 Labs' Pineapple Express seed is listed on SeedFinder as Big Bud x Hawaiian Skunk, a different cross with no Trainwreck in it. UpNorth has not said which seed line or cut it grows, but its listing points to the Trainwreck version.

Flavor & Aroma

UpNorth describes a fresh, tropical pineapple nose, then a sweet taste with citrus running underneath and a light pine finish. Its Weedmaps tags add earthy. Leafly's reviewers, covering every grower's version, report pineapple, tropical and citrus most often, so on flavor the brand and the crowd line up.

UpNorth has not published terpenes for this strain. Leafly's terpene data puts myrcene first, then caryophyllene and pinene, while its written description names caryophyllene, limonene and ocimene. For reference, pinene is the compound in pine needles, caryophyllene the bite in black pepper, and limonene the oil in citrus peel. The pineapple comes through clearest on the first few pulls.

Effects

UpNorth pitches Pineapple Express as a smooth, energetic lift that keeps the mood bright and leaves room for creative work without weighing you down. Its tags list happy, uplifted, energetic, focused, euphoric and creative, with relaxed in the mix. Leafly's reviewers, more than four thousand of them, put happy, giggly and energetic on top; giggly is the one UpNorth leaves out.

The complaints Leafly users report most are dry mouth, anxiety and dry eyes. Energetic strains can turn racy when smoked fast, so pace the first half and keep water nearby.

Best For

  • Daytime plans: the brand built its pitch around a bright, functional lift
  • Fruit-first smokers: pineapple and citrus up front, pine in the back
  • Creative afternoons: UpNorth and Leafly's reviewers both point to upbeat, creative energy
  • Sharing on a walk: a gram splits easily between two people
  • Fans of the film: the strain that shares its name, in a single joint

Not for: bedtime, anyone who gets anxious on energetic strains, or a smoker after a heavy body stone.

Pairings

Food: fresh pineapple, obviously, or a slab of focaccia from Liguria Bakery if you get there before it sells out. A cappuccino at Caffe Trieste suits the morning crowd. Music: the film's theme song by Huey Lewis and the News, a Bay Area band, then anything sunny. Activity: a lap of Washington Square, a browse at City Lights Bookstore, or a walk down the Embarcadero to the Ferry Building while the lift is fresh.

Construction

UpNorth's website says its pre-rolls are "hand crafted for every journey with indoor, whole flower nugs," and its Weedmaps listings repeat the point. On a pre-roll label, whole flower generally means ground buds rather than the shake and trim left over after jars are packed. This is a single gram that Metrc files under Pre-Roll Flower: plain flower with no kief, oil or diamonds. UpNorth does sell diamond-infused joints, and this is not one of them. The brand has not published the paper, the tip, or whether the joint is a cone or a straight roll. UpNorth Distribution, the company behind the label, has held a Humboldt County distribution license since 2019 and also carries other growers' brands, Fig Farms among them. UpNorth places itself in the Emerald Triangle but has not named the grow behind these joints.

Dosing

New to it: one or two small pulls, then wait ten minutes before deciding on more.

Regular smoker: split it into two sittings, a few pulls before lunch and the rest mid-afternoon.

Heavy tolerance: the full gram in one go, ideally with somewhere to walk afterward.

Storage

Keep it sealed in its packaging or an airtight jar, out of the sun and away from heat. Fruit-forward notes are the first to fade, and a glovebox in summer dulls them fast. Ground flower dries out quicker than whole buds, so once the package is open, finish the joint within a week or two.
